FCPC responds to $252M emergency aid package coming for farmers, food plants hit by COVID-19
Created on 5/5/2020 3:20:15 PM

May 5, 2020 — Food and Consumer Products of Canada (FCPC) welcomed today’s Government of Canada announcement of a $252 million package aimed at helping agriculture and agri-food industries impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The package includes $77.5 million to assist food producers access more Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); adapt to health protocols; automate or modernize their facilities, processes, and operations; and respond to emerging pressures from COVID-19 so they can better supply Canadians with food during this period.

“We believe this a positive step forward,” explains Michael Graydon,  FCPC’s CEO.  “We specifically asked Prime Minister Trudeau, in a recent letter, to address concerns raised by our members related to costs associated with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), compliance with health and safety protocols, and technologies to improve productivity. Today the government delivered.”

FCPC is also pleased to see that the Prime Minister acknowledged the package represents an “initial announcement” and that more remains to be done to address the needs of Canada’s agriculture, agri-food and food processing sector. According to a recent member company survey, FCPC members outlined concerns over labour shortages, rising costs and a drop in productivity as food manufacturers adjust and pivot in response to the pandemic. In particular, FCPC looks forward to working with the government to help incentivize Canadians to fill almost 10,000 vacancies in the food and consumer product manufacturing sector and help off-set costs associated with training and upskilling Canadians. In many cases, FCPC member organizations are unable to operate at full capacity as a result of labour shortages. Without a qualified and skilled workforce, the food supply will remain vulnerable and unsustainable.
