FCPC hosts MP Reception with federal ministers in Ottawa
Created on 2/26/2016 10:06:39 AM

On Feb. 23, 2016, steps from Parliament Hill, FCPC's Board joined key political leaders to build awareness of the important contribution of our industry to Canadian communities across the country.

The reception presented an excellent opportunity to introduce FCPC and our member companies to the new government and to begin building relationships, which will be key to our broader agenda over the coming months.

The Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and the Hon. Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, spoke at our reception. In their remarks, both Ministers acknowledged the importance of food and consumer product manufacturing to the Canadian economy.

Having both ministers at the reception sent an important message to all MPs that we are an industry worth backing. The two ministers will be critical to FCPC and our key files as we continue discussions with government. It also sent strong signals to officials in the two departments to work closely together to make the future of manufacturing a priority, which is what we have been advocating for over several years.

About 100 guests, including Ministers, MPs and their staff, attended the reception.  Deputy Minister John Knubley from Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Associate Deputy Minister Chris Forbes from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada also attended.

FCPC's MP reception was successful in making decision-makers aware of our industry's importance to the Canadian economy and member companies' presence in Canada.  With almost 200 rookie MPs in Parliament (out of 338), this event was critical in raising our profile early on in the Liberal government's four-year mandate.

Following the reception, FCPC’s Board of Directors met with the Deputy Minister of Health, Simon Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy provided insight into Health Canada's priorities and timelines under the new Liberal government.  The meeting was positive and constructive, and we look forward to working in collaboration with Health Canada. In early March, FCPC President and CEO Nancy Croitoru and several FCPC member CEOs will meet with Minister of Health Jane Philpott.

FCPC will follow up with Ministers, MPs and their staff to discuss our priorities and how we can work together to ensure that our specific asks, as outlined in our pre-budget submission, are discussed and disseminated broadly with decision-makers in Ottawa.
