Toronto, November 19, 2012
– Food & Consumer Products of Canada (FCPC) is applauding the report released by the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) as it clearly lays out some of the serious challenges facing Canada’s food and beverage manufacturing sector.

As the largest employer in manufacturing, it’s important that the government continue to work with the food and beverage manufacturing industry so it can reach its full potential, invest more in the Canadian economy and create more jobs. Click here to read the CAPI report.

FCPC recently partnered with Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters to call on the federal government to provide additional support for manufacturing. Specifically, the report called for strengthened policies through support programs and taxation, strengthening the labour market by introducing more tax credits, strengthening economic integration with the United States by fully implementing the Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan, supporting market diversification by focusing on trade agreements that work to eliminate structural and regulatory barriers and reducing the regulatory burden to support investment. “Canada’s food and beverage manufacturing industry has the opportunity to be one of the strongest in the world. We have the water; the land and the people, but the industry is facing some serious challenges and we need additional support from the federal government to help our industry become a global leader in food processing.” – Nancy Croitoru, President & CEO, FCPC

  • With 300,000 people employed, the food, beverage and consumer products manufacturing sector is the largest employer in Canadian manufacturing.
  • For 20 years, Canada has recorded trade deficits in value-added processed food which includes secondary processing of food products and beverages, but since 2004, the deficit has worsened from less than $1 billion to $6.3 billion in 2011.
